Continuing a long-standing and much-appreciated tradition, the Smithville VFW will again host a short ceremony in observance of Veteran’s Day, as well as a free meal and fun following the ceremony.
Pct. 2 Commissioner Clara Beckett will speak at the event, as will Judge Chris Duggan. The ceremony honors all the veterans that have served in nation’s armed forces with song, speeches and ceremony, including an appearance by the Honor Guard of Bastrop County.
Following the short ceremony, members of the VFW pull out all the stops, opening up the hall to the community and serving up chili and stew for all to enjoy. The Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting their ever popular cake walk, with entry in the fun costing only a quarter. In addition, they will be holding a raffle, with a wide variety of items up for grabs. They will be selling tickets at the event, as well as at Brookshire Bros. on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 7.
As usual, locals can be expected to make a good showing at the event, but the draw may be stronger than usual this year. Lance Cpl. Cody Stanley, a Smithville High School graduate and native of Rosanky, was killed in action in Iraq earlier this month, and the community still mourns his loss.
