When the Blue Santa program kicked off early this month there was concern that Santa’s sleigh would be lighter than in years past. The Smithville Police Association charity, which has helped area families for over 20 years, was feeling the pinch during the current economic downturn according to Police Chief Rudy Supak, who said Blue Santa was experiencing an increase in requests for assistance and fewer donations to fulfill them.

But the little town that’s known for its community “can do” attitude brought forth the holiday spirit in a big way, and businesses and individuals from the Smithville area rallied to the cause with an outpouring of Christmas spirit that will make things merry for over 150 children.

“We had so many generous donations from businesses and individuals in the past week, there will be more than enough gifts for the children,” said Amanda Wills, supervising dispatcher at the Smithville Police Department and Blue Santa coordinator.

Wills, along with her husband Jason and high school volunteers Dalton Vann and Dillon Mosley were busy handing out big bags of gifts to families on Blue Santa day last Saturday.

One thankful recipient of Blue Santa cheer was Pamela Duncan. “It was a very hard year for us,” she said as she watched her daughter Monica receive a new tricycle from a Blue Santa volunteer.

Everyone watched the shy, but very excited 3-year old take her new three-wheeler for a spin around the chamber at city hall, complete with a candy cane firmly set in her mouth.

“My goodness, she is just so happy to have gifts this Christmas,” Duncan said fighting back tears. “We feel so blessed.”

Smithville’s community spirit made Blue Santa special this year in many ways. Businesses and individuals throughout the area gave generously when it was needed most. The Christmas spirit was flowing through the merry bands of volunteers as they wrapped gifts and labeled them with care.

That joy of the season was captured in the smile of a little 3-year old, skipping around the chamber at city hall, barely able to contain her joy. As she left, she shyly told the Blue Santa volunteers thank you, and wished them all a merry Christmas, eyes big, bright and filled with holiday delight.
