The Lady Tigers ended their game on Tuesday night, Dec. 15, in a close victory against the Gonzales Lady Apaches at home.

After a sluggish second quarter of no scoring, the Lady Tigers were able to rise up and pounce back for a win.

“The first half stunk,” said head coach Robin Ramsay. “There was low energy, no emotion and no enthusiasm. I’m proud of their comeback, and we are looking forward to the (Christmas) break.”

The first period started out looking good for Smithville, with Colline Morrell, who led the team with 12 points, getting the first field goal of the night.

Teammate Blakelee Saunders, who followed Morrell with 11 points, swished a three-pointer shortly after and another one later in the period.

The Lady Apaches’ Scott, who had a team-high 11 points, got her team’s third field goal, bringing the score to 12-6 Smithville with 2:37 remaining in the first period. They tried to catch up to the Lady Tigers in the remaining two minutes, getting two three-pointers and ending the period with a score of 16-12 Smithville.

In the second period, the Lady Apaches outscored the Lady Tigers by 14 points.
The Lady Tigers could not get the ball in the basket the whole period and had nine turnovers. They went into the locker room at halftime down by 10 points, with a score of 26-16.

The third period started out similar to the second with no scoring. With 5:35 minutes remaining in the period, the score was 31-16 Gonzales.

However, Saunders got Smithville back on the board with a field goal, and the Lady Tigers started regaining their momentum in the last three minutes of the period, ending it at 33-26 Gonzales.

The Lady Tigers’ Jaimie Kadlecek, who totaled with nine points, contributed two field goals at the start of the last period, getting the Lady Apaches’ lead down to three. Teammate Saunders got her third three-pointer later on, finally bringing the Tigers ahead by one at 37-36.

After a series of fouls on Gonzales in the last minute of the game, Smithville won 43-40.
