With a little less than a month to go before Smithville begins District 25-3A play, the Tigers are not backing down from anyone.

Smithville lost to District 17-4A power Manor 75-54 Monday night, Dec. 14, as the Mustangs’ LD Williams put in a game-high 23 points to lead the way.

After shooting well that past weekend at the Sealy Tournament, the Tigers struggled from the field, something head coach Cyril Adkins said he was a little disappointed about.

“We played a good team, and you can’t make the mistakes we did and beat a team like Manor,” Adkins said. “We are a team that likes to rely on our shooting, and we didn’t shoot the ball well.”

The Tigers (7-7) were led by Wade Childress’ 17 points, but only had one other player score in double digits.

Dominique Green added 10.

Manor put a 17-point cushion between it and Smithville at halftime.

The Tigers couldn’t catch up with the Mustangs, who extended their lead to 26 going into the fourth quarter.

“Everything we did with our pre-district schedule was to prepare us for district,” Adkins said. “Manor is a good opponent for that purpose.”

Smithville Tournament

During the Second Annual Tiger Classic Basketball Tournament this past weekend, the Tigers faced three tough losses.

“It was a disappointing tournament, especially being at home and losing” said head coach Cyril Adkins. “We definitely have a lot of room for improvement.”

Their first game against the Canyon Lake Hawks on Friday ended with a close 56-55 loss.

The Tigers outscored the Hawks in every period except the third, where they fell behind.
Tigers Coltyn Brown and Wade Childress each scored a team-high of 12 points.

Teammate Dominique Ward followed them with 11 points.

Other scoring players were Jacob Hannusch (9), Adam Hahn (6), Dominique Green (4), Reece Fierro (2) and Oscar Kenebrew (2).

Smithville faced another close loss to the Columbus Cardinals on Friday by a score of 57-50.

They again fell behind in the third period and tried to make a come back in the fourth, outscoring the Cardinals 17-13.

Kenebrew had a team-high of a whopping 17 points.

Teammate Brown followed him with another 12 points.

Other contributors were Hahn (8), Childress (6), Andrew Lowery (4) and Green (3).

On Saturday, the Tigers fell short to the Hays Rebels in their last game of the tournament by 10 points, 46-36.

Smithville had a slow first period, putting them behind for the rest of the game.

Brown and Hannusch each led the team with 15 points.

Green, Childress and Lowery all contributed two points each.
