Smith_shootingA Bastrop County man was arrested recently in connection with an incident in mid-December where he allegedly beat up his girlfriend and fired off a handgun in front of her.

Jeremiah Lynn Smith, 32, was arrested on Dec. 29 and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Smith is currently being held in the Bastrop County Jail on $50,000 bond.

According to reports from the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office, Smith and his 32-year-old girlfriend were returning to a residence on Big Bow Drive in Smithville on Dec. 12 when an argument broke out.

Smith allegedly began to choke the woman and hit her in the face, leaving her with two black eyes, bruises on the cheek and a busted lip before pulling out a loaded .38 caliber handgun and firing into the wall.

The victim was reportedly knocked unconscious. After awakening, she was physically prevented from leaving once by Smith but then was able to reach her car and prepare to drive away, according to the report.

Smith allegedly ripped the door handle off the vehicle before the woman was able to successfully leave the scene and reach a friends house.
