Editor,
I am a law-abiding citizen of Bastrop County and work here in Smithville. I find it disturbing that the Smithville Police Department finds it necessary to target people at 6 a.m. for speeding violations on Hwy. 95 coming into Smithville.
If the Smithville Police Department will go out of their way to employ an officer for no other reason than to target speeders at 6 a.m., then I will no longer support Smithville’s local economy.
All too often I stop for an item that was left off the grocery list – barbecue for a quick dinner midweek or just a simple soup and sandwich for lunch. I will kindly take my business to Bastrop where I don’t feel like I have someone’s sights set on me as an easy cash dispensary.

Stop speeding & you won’t have to worry about it.
If the citizens of Smithville have to choose between selling you a sandwich and the safety of our friends and family, then you can keep your money. If I understand correctly, there are homes, and a high school in the are the you’re describing and I have no problem whatsoever with the PD issuing tickets to anyone flying through the neighborhood… even at 6 A.M.
I agree, with the crime that seems to be going on in town I would like to see more patrol in the neighborhoods than anything. I’m afraid to leave ANYTHING laying around anymore. Times, they sure are a changing.
I think that as many police officers Smithville has for such a small town. There should not be much crime happening in town right under their nose.
