The varsity boys basketball team from the St. Paul Lutheran school in Serbin competed in the state of Texas Lutheran school basketball tournament in Austin recently, taking fifth place.
The tournament consisted of 30 teams from across the state playing on eight courts at 5 different schools in the Austin area. The tournament was held on Friday, Feb. 19 through Sunday, Feb. 21.
The Serbin team competed in Division II with 17 other teams. The Serbin boys defeated Trinity, Klein by a score of 38 to 18.
St. Paul Serbin then played St. Paul Thorndale in the second round of the tournament, losing 58 to 49.
St. Paul Serbin then played two more games on Saturday, winning by 10 and 13 points respectively against two Carrolton teams.
The final game for Serbin came against Crown of Life Colleyville on Sunday. Serbin held a slight lead throughout the game winning 36 to 30.
The St. Paul Serbin Voyagers went home with a fifth place ranking in the tournament. Its only loss was in the second round to Thorndale, the team that won the championship.
“I’ve never coached a team with more heart than this one,” athletic director Chris Fritsche said. “I’m very proud of all the boys and the effort they have given throughout the season.”
The tournament team consisted of Ty Kasper and Bradly Schautschick; eight grade, Aaron Fritsche, Roman Fuduli, Nicholas Gruetzner, Garrett Oltmann, Payton Oltmann, and Dylan Zoch; seventh grade and Jacob Birnbaum; sixth grade.
