During their first game of the season on Feb. 22, the varsity Tiger baseball team won 14-11 against Shiner St. Paul away from home.
Pitcher Dylan Hancock had a strong game, throwing eight strikeouts during the three innings he pitched.
Hancock also went 3 for 5 in hitting, with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Ace Fierro went 3 for 5 as well, hitting a double, getting three RBIs and scoring two runs.
Contributing two singles, 2 RBIs and a run, Aaron Rodriguez went 2 for 4.
Other players who scored runs were Jacob Hannusch (2), Coltyn Brown, Justin Teague, Reagan Kunz and Tyler Hancock.
Rockdale Tournament
In the Rockdale tournament, which lasted from last Thursday to Saturday, the Tigers ended up tied for third out of 10 teams.
“Overall, I was very pleased with the pitching and defense and also the way the boys hit the ball,” said head coach Ryan Moerbe. “Placing tied for third in this tournament is a real accomplishment considering the level of competition from several of the top 2A and 3A teams.”
For their first game, the Tigers beat Elgin 6-1, with Hannusch throwing 11 strikeouts during the six innings he pitched.
Hannusch also went 1 for 4 in hitting, getting a single and two RBIs.
Rodriguez was the highlight of the game, going 1 for 2 and hitting a homerun. He also had a RBI.
Other players who scored runs were Dylan Hancock, Teague, Garrett McKay and Tyler Hancock.
During their second game, the Tigers did not have as great of luck, falling 8-6 to Cameron.
Dylan Hancock, who went 2 for 3 in hitting, was able to squeeze in a homerun, hit a double, make three RBIs and score a run.
His brother, Tyler Hancock, who went 1 for 2, hit a double as well, got two RBIs and scored a run.
The Tigers dominated McGregor in hitting during their third game, winning 12-5.
Pitcher Bryce Helmcamp was able to throw seven strikeouts during the six innings he pitched. He also went 2 for 3 in hitting, got a homerun, hit a double, got two RBIs and scored a run.
Fierro, who had an outstanding game, went 4 for 4, scored two homeruns, hit a double, a single, six RBIs and scored three runs.
Other players who scored runs were Hannusch (3), Dylan Hancock (2), Brown (2) and Teague.
Smithville was held scoreless against a tough Waco Robinson team in their fourth game, falling to them 10-0.
Rodriguez and McKay each hit a single, but were not able to make it back to the home plate.
However, during their last game of the tournament, the Tigers were able to hold Rockdale scoreless, defeating them 5-0.
Rodriguez, who went 2 for 4, hit a triple, single, one RBI and scored two runs.
Meanwhile, Dylan Hancock, who went 1 for 3, hit a double and scored two runs.
Lastly, Hannusch, who went 2 for 4, hit two singles, made two RBIs and scored a run.
