The varsity Tiger baseball team had something to celebrate about this weekend after going undefeated and winning first place in the Rice Consolidated tournament.
The tournament, which lasted from last Thursday to Saturday, consisted of three games, all of which were strong games for Smithville.
“This was a tournament where we played great in all three phases of the game – pitching, hitting and defense,” said head coach Ryan Moerbe. “We got great pitching performances from Justin Teague, Jacob Hannusch, Dylan Hancock and Bryce Helmcamp, allowing just 10 runs in all the games combined. At the plate, we hit the ball well, scoring a total of 36 runs and collecting 42 hits overall. Defensively, we committed just two errors and made routine plays.”

Game One

In their first game of the tournament, the Tigers were able to hold Brookshire Royal scoreless the entire time (15-0) much thanks to Teague’s almost flawless pitching.
Teague pitched all seven innings of the game, throwing 10 strikeouts and allowing only one hit.
Out of their 15 total points, Smithville scored six of them in the final inning.
Dylan Hancock did well at the plate, going 2 for 5 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs.
Going 2 for 5 as well, Aaron Rodriguez was able to get in a single, triple, two RBIs and two runs.
Ace Fierro also had an impressive game, going 2 for 3 with a single, double, three RBIs and two runs.
Other players who scored runs were Coltyn Brown (2), Hannusch (2), Helmcamp, Teague and Tyler Hancock.

Game Two
During their second game, the Tiger defense held Boling to just two runs with a final score of 7-2
Hannusch pitched all seven innings, throwing seven srikeouts and getting five hits and two runs.
Rodriguez went 1 for 4 with a homerun, two RBIs and a run.
Meanwhile, Helmcamp went 3 for 4 with two singles, a double, two RBIs and a run.
Dylan Hancock also had strong hitting, going 2 for 3 while getting a single, double, RBI and a run.
Other players who scored a run each were Hannusch, Teague, Brown and Alex Medrano.

Game Three
The Tigers’ final game against Rice Consolidated was very much a team effort, ending with a score of 14-8 Smithville.
The Tigers’ strong hitting made up for its pitching and defense.
Dylan Hancock, who pitched the first four innings of the game, threw six strikeouts and had four hits and five runs.
Helmcamp, who filled in for Hancock in the last three innings, threw six strikeouts as well and had four hits and three runs.
Brown had a phenomenal game in hitting, going 2 for 4 with a homerun, a double, three RBIs and three runs.
Going 3 for 5, Taylor Gadus was able to get a single, double, triple, three RBIs and two runs.
Meanwhile, Dylan Hancock and Rodriguez each went 2 for 4 with a single, a double and two runs. Hancock also had two RBIs, while Rodriguez had one.
Hannusch, Teague and Garrett McKay all contributed a run each.
“Overall, this was a great tournament for us, and I am very proud of the way the young men played,” Moerbe said.
