Playhouse Smithville, founded in January by John and April Daniels, will hold auditions for Little Shop of Horrors, the Broadway musical about a boy, a girl and a carnivorous plant from outer space.
The piece was written by Alan Manken and Howard Ashman, also known for writing Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.”
The show will feature local rock and roll band, Vintage 248 who will play a live, “high-test” version of the score.
The Playhouse starts its première season with Little Shop of Horrors on July 23, but the work has been going on for six months.
The renovation of the building, which was formerly Charlie’s Bar-B-Que, started in January and there have been two open work calls, one in late March and the other in early June. The building is being converted into a “Black Box” theatre.
“The concept of the ‘Black Box’ is that the room changes with every show. There is no permanent stage. We will adapt the room to each show and move the audience all around,” Daniels said.
The band Vintage 248 began working on the music for the show in January also. Vintage 248 features local musicians Michael McGary on bass, Joel Daniels on drums and Matt Torrez, April and John’s son, on guitar.
“We need, actors, singers and dancers,” April Daniels said. “No experience is necessary. Bring energy, charm and excitement. We will provide the rest.”
The auditions are at Playhouse Smithville, 110 Main St. in Smithville on Saturday, June 19 at 2 p.m. and Monday, June 21 at 7 p.m. Call (512) 360-7397 for more information or visit playhousesmithville.com.
