Lee Ann Goertz Lee: Rockne News

I went to my first turkey shoot Sunday at VFW Post 2527 in Rockne, not knowing what to expect.

I had always pictured a bunch of people chasing turkeys and trying to shoot them (like a calf scramble for adults), but I knew that probably wasn’t the case. The truth is, it’s much more civil and organized, with competitors taking turns shooting at targets.

A winner is chosen for each round and awarded prizes. That’s where the turkey comes in (should have known!).

Besides turkeys and hams, cash prizes were given, as well as gift certificates for anything from a dove hunt to a free haircut.

One of the big winners of the day was Curtis Wendland, who won three rounds.

Dan Beck, Charlie Ray Kirk and Tim Beck were all winners in the turkey shoot at the VFW in Rockne on Sunday.

VFW Post Commander Pete Hoffman wasn’t quite sure how long it has been since a turkey shoot has been held there, but figures it’s been at least 10 years or more. He was also quite pleased with the turnout on Sunday.

“We didn’t know how many would show up, but this one went so well, we are definitely planning to have more,” Hoffman said.

Stay tuned for upcoming times and dates and who knows, you just may win a turkey in time for the upcoming holidays.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Friends gathered at Leon’s Sunday to eat, drink and honor Rose Henderson for her Aug. 21 birthday and Paul Galloway for his Aug. 22 birthday.

Friends prepared a table full of delicious food and many brought gifts for the birthday celebrants.

Both Rose and Paul are active in the community, particularly in local barbeque cook-offs.
