The Smithville Public Library is offering a free “resume writing” workshop for area residents who are out of work or looking for a better paying job.

The library will offer the workshop on Thursday, Sept. 16 from 1-3 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon. The workshop will take place at the library and space is limited. No reservations are required, so seating is on a first-come basis.

Attendees can bring a current copy of their resume and other materials for review.

Along with resume writing, the workshop will discuss cover letters, interviewing and follow-ups.

“Attendees will take away a lot of useful information and resources from this workshop to help them create a good, solid resume,” said John Dees, the workshop presenter and a member of the library’s Board of Directors. “I went to this workshop presented at another library; afterward, I went home and immediately applied all that I learned to rewriting my resume.”

Next up: job hunting on the web

This workshop is the first of a two-part series. The second workshop, “Job Hunting on the Internet,” will be held later in the month. Specific details will be posted at the library website at www.smithvillepubliclibrary.org, and in The Smithville Times.

More workshops planned

The library, along with the Smithville Community Network and Lost Pines High Tech Consortium, are working to create a series of workshops on job hunting and workplace skills such as basic computing, customer service, communications (writing and speaking), applied math/science, and other related topics.

A two-week “boot camp” on job hunting and workplace skills is planned for October.

“The Smithville area has a smaller workforce than other parts of Bastrop county, and we are supporting more people over 65 and more kids under 9. So, it’s vital that not only can people find work, but earn more money,” Dees said. “That’s what we aim to achieve with this effort.”
