Staff Reports

Two people died and a third person was hospitalized after a head-on collision Sunday morning on FM 2236, near Camp Swift.

DPS officials said John J. Lee, 19, of Cedar Creek was driving a Chevy S-10 pickup shortly after 9 a.m. when he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and crossed over the center stripe and struck a car driven by Laura Ashley, 50, of Bastrop. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

David Thompson, a passenger in Lee’s truck, was taken by helicopter to University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin.

All three were wearing seatbelts and alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the wreck, DPS officials said.

In another wreck, a Bastrop County woman died Nov.14 in a one-vehicle collision on FM 812 near Old Sandhill Road.

According to DPS reports, Wanda Hunt McLoud, 64, of Dale, was traveling eastbound on FM 812 at approximately 3:27 p.m. when her vehicle, a 1998 Ford Escort, left the roadway, traveled into a ditch and struck a tree.

McLoud was ejected from  the vehicle. The vehicle rolled, and the driver became pinned under its front left tire. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
